The exhibition “Geological Rhapsody” aims to explore how geological activity shapes human perspective, behavior, and notions of ecological coexistence, through the artistic perspectives of Icelandic and Japanese artists.
Although Iceland and Japan are approximately 8,600 km apart, they share curious cultural similarities, such as a deep relationship with the landscape and animistic worldviews. This may stem from their geological commonalities: both are island nations located along tectonic boundaries where the Eurasian and North American plates emerge on one side and subduct on the other, resulting in active crustal movement and frequent volcanic activity.
By addressing examples of geological phenomena, the social responses they provoke, and the ways humans attempt to cope with them, Geological Rhapsody seeks to connect them to the actual situation and current global context.
